For many people, visiting the dentist can feel overwhelming. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and for some individuals it develops into a deep-rooted phobia that makes even thinking about an appointment stressful.
Avoiding dental visits altogether might feel like the easiest option but that commonly leads to worsening oral health, an increasing sense of built-up fear over time, and a more serious, and costly, treatment being needed later down the line. That’s why developing supportive, compassionate approaches to managing dental anxiety are so important.
At The Dental Wave, we want all of our patients to feel comfortable visiting the dentist, which is why we’ve organised a Dental Phobia Workshop. This event offers individuals the opportunity to rebuild their confidence and develop practical ways to cope with their fears in a safe, structured environment.
As a private dentist in Portsmouth, we understand that dental phobia is real, complex and deeply personal. Therefore, we’ve designed our workshops to help people move forward at their own pace in a supportive setting that prioritises comfort, understanding and gradual progress.

Understanding Dental Phobia
Dental phobia goes far beyond mild nervousness. For some people, the anxiety is so intense that it prevents them from booking or attending appointments for years. Others may feel panicked simply by walking into a dental waiting room or hearing the sound of dental instruments.
These fears often stem from past negative experiences, loss of control, embarrassment about oral health or general anxiety disorders. In many cases, the fear becomes stronger the longer dental visits are avoided.
The good news is that dental phobia doesn’t need to be something that people have to live with forever. With the right guidance and coping strategies, it is possible to gently retrain the brain’s fear response and gradually rebuild an individual’s trust in the dental environment.
A Safe and Supportive Environment
Our Dental Phobia Workshop is designed specifically for people who struggle with dental anxiety or phobia. Rather than taking place in a traditional dental setting, the workshop is held in a calm and neutral environment.
The sessions take place at the Portsmouth Technopole, away from the sights and sounds that often trigger dental anxiety. We’ve found that this change of setting helps attendees feel more relaxed and open to learning new techniques.
The day runs from 9:30 until 15:00, providing plenty of time to explore coping strategies, share experiences and begin reframing the way you perceive dental care. Lunch is included, along with tea and coffee throughout the day, helping to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
Additionally, at the end of the workshop, you’ll be offered an optional visit to The Dental Wave Practice to have a look around without the pressure of an appointment. The trip becomes a relaxed way to build confidence in the dental environment without worrying about having any treatment.
Upcoming Workshop Dates
To give people several opportunities to attend, our Dental Phobia Workshops are scheduled on the following dates:
- Saturday 21st March
- Tuesday 26th May
- Saturday 18th July
We hold each workshop in small groups, ensuring everyone receives personal attention and feels comfortable participating. Because group sizes are intentionally limited, booking in advance is essential to secure your place. For further information about booking into the workshop, please text/whatsapp the word ‘Phobia’ to 07983895130.
The cost of the workshop is £135 per person.
What Happens During the Dental Phobia Workshop?
We’ve designed our dental phobia workshop to be a safe, non-judgemental space where people can openly discuss their fears without feeling embarrassed or pressured. If you think you’ve tried everything to overcome your fear and that nothing will work, then this workshop is definitely for you!
During the day, attendees will learn practical techniques to help manage anxiety, including ways to calm the nervous system and gently challenge negative associations linked to dental treatment. The aim is not to rush anyone into treatment, but to help individuals feel more confident and in control of their own journey.
Participants will also explore ways to communicate effectively with dental professionals, helping them feel empowered during future appointments.
Many people attending the workshop discover that simply being around others who share similar experiences can be incredibly reassuring. Knowing you are not alone in your fears can make a huge difference.
Real Experience Behind the Approach
Our approach to dental phobia is deeply personal. At The Dental Wave, we have first-hand experience with the challenges dental anxiety can create.
Our own Dr. Antonia Salzl faced this issue when helping her daughter manage severe dental fears. Through this experience, she began exploring ways to gently retrain the brain’s fear response.
Working alongside her sister, a psychologist, they explored proven psychological methods that help individuals gradually change how their brain reacts to dental triggers. These techniques formed the foundation of the strategies shared during our Dental Phobia Workshop.
This personal journey has helped shape a compassionate approach that recognises fear is not something to dismiss or rush through, but something that can be addressed with patience, understanding and the right tools.
Small Steps Can Lead to Big Changes
One of the most important messages we share during the workshop is that change is always possible.
At The Dental Wave, we have worked with people who once felt unable to even step into the waiting room. With time, support and the right coping mechanisms, many of them now attend their routine check-ups feeling relaxed and confident in the experience.
This transformation rarely happens overnight, but it begins with a single step. For many people, attending the workshop is the first step towards rebuilding their confidence and regaining control over their oral health.
Taking the First Step
Dental phobia can feel isolating, but it is far more common than many people realise. With the right support, understanding and gentle guidance, it is possible to overcome those fears and feel more comfortable about dental care.
Our Dental Phobia Workshop, run by our private dentist in Portsmouth has been created to help people move forward with confidence. Through compassion, psychological insight and practical techniques, we aim to ensure everyone who attends leaves feeling more hopeful and better equipped to manage their fears.
If dental anxiety has been holding you back, this workshop could be the supportive first step towards a calmer, more confident future at the dentist.
