We understand that dental anxiety is a very real concern for many patients. Dental sedation is an option that can help you feel more relaxed during treatment. At The Dental Wave, we take a gentle and considered approach to patient care, and our team will always talk through your concerns before recommending any form of sedation.
Dental sedation involves the use of medication to help patients feel calmer and more relaxed during dental procedures. It is not the same as a general anaesthetic — you remain conscious throughout and are able to respond to instructions. The most commonly used form in dentistry is conscious sedation, which is administered intravenously (IV). Your dentist will explain the options available and whether sedation is appropriate for you based on your medical history and treatment needs.
Sedation may be considered for patients who:
A full medical history and assessment will be carried out prior to any sedation being offered. Not everyone is suitable for sedation, and your safety is always our first priority.
You will need to arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to your appointment and take you home, as you will not be able to drive after receiving sedation. You may also be advised not to eat or drink for a period before your appointment.
The sedation takes effect quickly, and many patients find they have little or no memory of the procedure. You will be monitored throughout and until it is safe for you to leave.
If dental anxiety has been preventing you from seeking treatment, we encourage you to get in touch. Our team is here to listen and to help you find an approach that works for you. You can call us on 023 9282 8193 or book an appointment online at thedentalwave.co.uk.
