Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment) is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth. Each tooth contains a soft tissue called the pulp, which sits within the root canals. When this tissue becomes infected or damaged — often due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma — root canal treatment may be recommended to remove the affected tissue and preserve the tooth.
Our dentists will carry out a thorough clinical assessment before recommending any treatment. Signs that may indicate a problem with the tooth pulp include:
However, some teeth requiring treatment may present with no symptoms at all, which is why regular check-ups are important.
Treatment is usually carried out over one or two appointments. Local anaesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable throughout. The dentist carefully removes the infected or inflamed pulp tissue, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals them with a filling material.
A crown or restoration is often placed afterwards to protect the tooth and restore its function. Your dentist will discuss your individual treatment plan with you before proceeding.
Some mild discomfort or sensitivity in the days following treatment is normal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Our team will provide you with clear aftercare instructions and are always available to answer any questions. Like all dental treatments, long-term success depends on good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.
