Emma dental practice manager portsmouthHere, Emma, our practice manager, discusses our teeth whitening in Portsmouth. Learn about our treatments and how the Dental Wave can get you a brighter smile safely.

After working in the dental industry for just over 12 years, initially as a dental nurse, I have encountered many patients, friends and family members who have felt self-conscious of their ‘yellowing’ teeth. Your teeth may not necessarily look ‘yellow’ to other people, but if it bothers you and, therefore, affects your well-being, it is worth taking steps to refresh and brighten your smile.

The safest, most effective way of doing this is through teeth whitening with a dental care professional. Do be careful, as there are many whitening treatments on the market that are cheaper and make promises of having ‘bright white’ teeth, but they can be harmful and cause permanent damage to your teeth and gums.

The system we use at The Dental Wave allows you to carry out the whitening treatment in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace. At-home whitening is the safest, best-researched and most popular whitening procedure (providing it has been prescribed by a registered and competent dental professional!)

At The Dental Wave, we use Boutique teeth whitening system with whitening gel concentrations of either 10% or 16% carbamide peroxide.

Is this a safe treatment?

Absolutely. Carbamide peroxide is a hydrogen peroxide that is compounded with urea. Carbamide releases about 50% of its peroxide in the first 2 to 4 hours, then the remainder over the next 4 to 6 hours. Perfect for use while watching TV in the evening or overnight while you sleep!

To start your treatment journey, we would book you in for an initial assessment, where if you are suitable for the treatment, the clinician will take a scan of your teeth.  The scan will then be sent straight to a lab to make your own personal and bespoke teeth whitening trays. The scan is used to make the trays for your mouth only, ensuring you have a good fit.

Once the whitening trays arrive at the practice from the lab, we will see you for a second appointment for you to try the trays in and for us to talk you through how to use them. We will advise you on how to get the most effective result while reducing sensitivity as much as possible.

Will it make my teeth sensitive?

You may now be wondering if everyone experiences sensitivity. The answer to this is no, not necessarily. Our Teeth whitening in Portsmouth works by slowly bleaching each tooth’s dentin layer; this, however, is the same layer that causes sensitivity. If you do not suffer from sensitivity normally, you may not experience any. If you suffer from severe sensitivity, we may be able to manage this by tailoring your usage and strength of the whitening gel to try and minimise the sensitivity as much as possible, or it may, in rare cases, mean the treatment is not suitable for you.

Our clinicians can advise you on how to reduce stains and discolouration in future to prolong the longevity of the treatment. This may be done by reducing or cutting out certain foods or drinks and with an effective oral hygiene regime (toothbrushing and cleaning in between your teeth!)

If you have had teeth whitening treatment through us in the past and still have the trays, then it is easy to simply buy some extra tubes to top up the shade of your teeth in future!
